Biography
Gladys Pearl Monroe was born in 1902 at Porfirio Diaz (later called Piedras Negras), Coahuila, Mexico. She was the older of two children of Otis Elmer Monroe (1866-1909) and Della Mae Hogan (1876-1927).
Gladys' brother, Marion E. Monroe, was born in 1905. Married with three children. Marion disappeared 20 Nov 1929 and was declared dead in 1955. [1]
Gladys first married on 17 May 1917 to Jasper "Jack" Newton Baker (1886-1951). Della Monroe declared that her daughter was aged 18 (but in fact she was hardly 15) under the pretext there was no proof of her date of birth. Della attended to the wedding, then gave the young couple the room located at Westminster Street, and quickly moved into Charles Grainger's bungalow. [2]
In Jun 1921 Gladys asked John for a divorce due to "extreme cruelty and extreme mental cruelty." The divorce became final on 11 May 1923. [2] Jack took the children away from her and moved home to Kentucky, USA.[3]
Gladys married secondly on 11 Oct 1924 to Martin Edward "Eddie" Mortensen [4] (1897-1981). Gladys left Eddie four months after their wedding. Biographers believe Charles Stanley Gifford (1898-1965), a salesman for Consolidated Films, where Gladys worked as a film cutter, was Marilyn's biological father. Mortensen divorced Gladys on 15 Aug 1928. Neither Mortenson nor Gifford played any part in Monroe's life.[5]
Gladys married thirdly on 20 April 1949 to John Stewart Eley. He died in 1952. John Stewart Eley had married in 1932 at Malheur County, Oregon to Frances Alva Prouty (per Oregon marriages on ). In the 1942 WWII draft list, John is listed in Portland, Oregon and identified exactly by name, birth date and birth location. He states his closest relative is Frances Eley, same address as his in Portland, Oregon. He was working for the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation. From this information, we know that John S. Eley was in Oregon 1934-1940 at least, and married during that time to Frances.
On 15 Jan 1935 Gladys was declared definitely insane (paranoïd schizophrenia) by the doctors from the Norwalk State Hospital, where her own mother was several years earlier. The surgeon general report declared, "Her illness is characterised by religious preoccupations and a deep depression and some excitation; this condition seems to be chronic." [6]
Gladys passed away on 11 Mar 1984 in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA. [7]
