Biography of Alexis Arguello

Alexis Arguello, a professional Nicaraguan boxer and three-time world champion, was born on April 19, 1952, in Managua, Nicaragua. Coming from a poor family, Arguello grew up on the streets, regularly participating in street fights. He soon became one of the most well-known street fighters in the area.

Arguello left school and turned to amateur boxing, which provided him with a decent income. Under the guidance of a professional trainer, he quickly showed promising results. When Arguello turned sixteen, he made the decision to become a professional boxer.

Although his debut in the professional ring was unsuccessful, Arguello eventually proved himself to be one of the best. For five years, he fought in Managua and then traveled to Panama to compete for the world championship title.

Despite not winning in Panama, Arguello did not lose hope. On the contrary, he trained harder than ever. Soon, he became the holder of the championship belt after defeating Mexican fighter Olivares, becoming a world champion for the first time at the age of twenty-two.

Afterward, Arguello had numerous fights, most of which ended in victory for the Nicaraguan boxer. In the late seventies, he moved from the super featherweight category to the lightweight category. In 1978, he made his debut in this new category, defeating Alfredo Escalera from Puerto Rico. This battle was challenging but ultimately victorious, earning Arguello the title of champion in two weight categories. He reached the pinnacle of success.

In the summer of 1981, Arguello traveled to London to face Scottish boxer Jim Watt in a match. Once again, Arguello emerged victorious and became a three-time world champion. The following year, he fought against Aaron Pryor from the United States. Pryor managed to defeat Arguello, which played a role in his subsequent retirement from the sport.

After his retirement, Arguello briefly returned to boxing and even won one fight. Currently, he is a politician and has been serving as the mayor of the capital city of Nicaragua since 2008.
