Biography of Brittany Murphy
Brittany Anne Bertolotti, known professionally as Brittany Murphy, was an American actress and singer. She was born on November 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia to Sharon Murphy, who was of Irish and Eastern European Jewish descent, and Angelo Bertolotti, who was of Italian-American heritage. After her parents divorced when she was two years old, she took her mother's last name.
Early Career
At the age of nine, Murphy began performing in local theater productions and signed her first contract with an acting agency at thirteen. She appeared in television commercials and moved to California with her mother at the age of thirteen. She landed a role in the television show "Blossom" and went on to have a successful career in both independent and major studio films, playing lead roles in almost all of them.
Breakthrough Role
Murphy's breakthrough role came in the film "Clueless" (1995), where she played Tai Frasier alongside Alicia Silverstone. She received a nomination for the Young Artists Awards for her role in the TV drama "David and Lisa" (1998). Although she appeared in many films and TV shows, her notable works include "Girl, Interrupted" (1999) with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, and "Don't Say a Word" (2001) alongside Michael Douglas. In 2002, Murphy won the Young Hollywood Award for her achievements in the industry.
Acting and Music Career
In addition to her acting talent, Murphy had a remarkable singing voice. In the early 1990s, she performed as a vocalist for her own rock band, Blessed Soul. The band's songs and Murphy's voice can be heard in the soundtracks of films like "Girl, Interrupted" (1999) and "Riding in Cars with Boys" (2001).
Personal Life and Tragic Death
Murphy's personal life was often linked with her career. She was rumored to have dated Jonathan Brandis, her co-star from the TV series "SeaQuest DSV," and Eminem during the filming of "8 Mile." However, her relationship with Ashton Kutcher, whom she worked with in the film "Just Married," gained more attention. They were seen together frequently and were considered a happy couple by their friends. However, Kutcher ended up marrying Demi Moore, leaving Murphy heartbroken.
In May 2007, Murphy married screenwriter Simon Monjack in a private Jewish ceremony. On December 20, 2009, Murphy tragically passed away at the age of 32 from cardiac arrest at her home in Los Angeles. The cause of her death was initially attributed to pneumonia and anemia. Her husband also died from pneumonia months later, raising suspicions of mold in their home as the possible cause. In memory of Murphy, her mother and husband established the Brittany Murphy Foundation, which provides support and education in the arts to underprivileged children from broken homes.
